Cloudaloud and Phoenix Publishing Partnership Launches Chinese audiobooks into UK Nurseries and Schools

Groundbreaking initiative brings Chinese audiobooks to UK the first time

(London, June 2022) Cloudaloud, the UK’s first dedicated audiobook streaming app for children, is delighted to announce a unique content partnership with Phoenix Publishing and Media (PPM), the leading trade publishing group and the second largest primary and secondary school education publisher in China.

“It’s a ground-breaking initiative,” said Marisa McGreevy-Rose, Chief Content Officer at Cloudaloud. “We are very proud to present the Phoenix audiobook list to Cloudaloud subscribers and schools. This partnership will enable children from dual-language families in the UK, and those wishing to develop their literacy and language skills, to stream bestselling Chinese audiobooks at home and in the classroom. It’s a UK-first, and very exciting for both parties.”

The Cloudaloud app is available to individual subscribers on iOS and Android for £3.99 a month, whilst Early Years settings and Primary schools in the UK can sign up for a Cloudaloud Education licence.

Dr Katie Sparks, Cloudaloud’s CEO, added, “We believe strongly in championing literacy and bringing the joy of storytelling to children. Our partnership with Phoenix enables us to offer a broad range of high-quality educational content that will support children’s language development.”

Alicia Liu, CEO of Singing Grass business consultancy, who brokered the deal, added, “we believe in the benefits of learning a second language at an early age, in particular for Chinese diaspora parents. It is so important that children listen to Chinese and pick up sounds and intonation at a young age if they are going to be truly fluent native speakers. I’m thrilled that this partnership will offer UK children a unique opportunity to open up a magical world from China.”

Fan Ming, Director of Publishing & Global Business Development at Phoenix Publishing and Media said, “the content we have selected is specially tailored for 2 to 7 years old for the early years language learning and literacy development. It has the world’s favourite children’s stories, from Chinese fairytales and legends to global literary classics published by Phoenix in Chinese. We hope to enlighten and delight the children in the UK by working with Cloudaloud - providing them with an exciting opportunity to experience the best Chinese audio stories.”

Xu Chenmin, Head of Phoenix Digital Media, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Phoenix Publishing and Media added, “The wider China audiobook market is estimated to have 560 million consumers and to be worth $1.1 billion, with a 30% annual growth. We have invested heavily in the audio content production and format offers with the strong local market demand, and we are excited to see the continued growth expanding into the UK too.”
