BIBF Celebrates 40th Anniversary with Focus on AI, Global IP Licensing and International Cultural Exchange

The Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF), Asia’s largest publishing event, will celebrate its 40th anniversary from 17–21 June 2026 at the China National Convention Center in Beijing.

Marking four decades since its launch in 1986, BIBF 2026 reflects the continued evolution of the publishing industry, with this year’s fair placing particular focus on AI transformation, cross-media IP licensing and international creative collaboration.

Spanning 60,000 square metres, the fair is expected to welcome more than 1,700 exhibitors from 82 countries and regions, alongside over 1,000 cultural events taking place across Beijing.

Expanding Beyond Traditional Publishing

One of the major developments this year is the launch of BIBF’s first-ever IP Licensing Zone, created in partnership with the China Toy & Juvenile Products Association (CTJPA). The new area reflects the growing convergence between publishing, animation, gaming, licensing and consumer products.

BIBF ComicHub will also expand significantly in 2026, welcoming international participants from across the global ACG (Animation, Comic, Game) sector, including exhibitors from the United States, Nigeria, Canada and Europe.

AI and the Future of Publishing

Recognising the growing role of Artificial Intelligence across the publishing industry, BIBF 2026 will debut the new “Internet Publishing Joint Pavilion,” bringing together major Chinese publishing groups, university presses and digital platforms to showcase developments in AI-integrated publishing workflows, AIGC applications and online content ecosystems.

Leading Chinese digital publishing and entertainment companies including Tencent, NetEase, Yuewen and ByteDance’s Fanqie Novel will participate in this year’s programming.

A number of key forums throughout the fair will also focus on AI and publishing transformation, including the Beijing International Publishing Forum (BIPF), the PubTech Conference and the International Publishing Education Summit.

International Participation and Cultural Exchange

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will serve as the 2026 Country of Honour, featuring both a Cultural Pavilion and Copyright Pavilion, alongside a series of China-UAE publishing and cultural exchange events.

BIBF 2026 will also host a wide range of literary and cultural programming featuring internationally recognised authors, translators and publishing professionals.

BIBF Global Reading Ambassador Liu Zhenyun will host a series of conversations with international translators and publishers, while a dedicated exhibition will showcase translated editions of Yu Hua’s works in more than 50 languages.

Additional events will feature international writers, illustrators, publishers and artists from across Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia.

Reflecting Changes in China’s Reading Market

The themes of BIBF 2026 also reflect broader developments within China’s publishing and consumer landscape.

Recent industry reports show continued growth in content-driven e-commerce, short-form video discovery and online reading ecosystems, while demand for both professional development and emotionally driven reading content continues to expand among younger readers.

As BIBF enters its fifth decade, the fair continues to position itself as an international platform connecting publishing, technology, licensing and global cultural exchange.
